Fill Flash Lecture

Fill flash lights are most commonly used for weddings or events with low light conditions. They are a brilliant bridge between studio lighting and in-built camera flashes.

The four main modes of the Nikon SB-800 Speedlight are:

TTL- Through The Lens

TTL-BL-Through The Lens Balanced Fill

AA- Auto Aperture

Manual

TTL- Through The Lens

This mode allows the flashgun to work through the lens of the camera to calculate the relevant settings needed to create the correct exposure. You can adjust the power of the flash by moving the dial on the back of the flash light. This setting is great for indoor photography as it has a setting has a 10 meter flash range. If the subject is closer you can soften the light by adding diffusion.

TTL-BL- Through The Lens Balanced Fill

This mode allows the flashlight to balance the flash with the natural ambient light. This setting is best suited to location and outdoor photo shoots. This is a full automatic setting meaning the photographer has less control over things like depth of field as they do not set the aperture, however it is good for fast paced events like weddings.

AA- Auto Aperture

The perfect setting for fashion and portrait shots. To use Auto Aperture mode, set the camera aperture priority mode, set the flashlight to AA, set the required aperture on the camera, the flashlight will now calculate the required shutter speed and the power needed to correctly expose the shot.

Manual

This is the most complex setting the flashlight has. You have to set both the aperture and the flash output level. This setting is best for when the other modes can't achieve the correct exposure.

To start with it is best to use the "Through The Lens" or "Auto Aperture" modes until you become confident with using the flashlight.
