Artist Research- Cal Gaines

The following images are pieces from Cal Gaines experimental work.

I love the soft focus feel of this image. The pink and purple tones from the lighting gel give a warm tone to the image making it softer and less harsh than a bright white background. The colour purple combines the cold sadness of blue and the anger and frustration of red. I like that although this is a portrait It has been shot in landscape, the creation of extra negative space evokes an emptiness as the subject does not fill the frame. The lines running down the model remind me of a curtain that has been moved gently during a long exposure. The model also looks translucent, this could have been achieved by changing the blending mode or opacity in post-production. Giving the model a see through look also contributes to the feeling of emptiness when viewing the image.

This image has similar tones to the previous photograph except it only consists of two colours, black and purple. I think this image was created by setting the camera to a long exposure and moving the camera/tripod as opposed to moving the subject. This could symbolise being stationary and getting on with what they're doing while life keeps on going quickly around you. I like the colour gradient in this piece. starting with intense black in the top left corner to dark purple then bright lilac and back to dark purple. This effect highlights a diagonal strip in the centre of the image where the main subject is.
