Final Evaluation
After receiving the commercial enterprise brief I started by researching existing freelance commercial photographers. I looked at the types of photography they offer, the prices they charge and what each package includes. I also researched options for hiring a studio in my local area but due timings this was not a suitable option.
I attended several lectures about the various types of commercial photography as well as this we were fortunate to receive guest talks from photographers like Tom Oldham and Amber from Liberty Pearl Photography who are currently working in the industry. I found this very helpful as it gave me information on starting and working commercially in photography.
I then started thinking about possible clients I could work with. Once I had found a client, we talked about the kind of photographs she would like and what she would be using them for. We communicated via email, telephone and face to face consultation. The client told me she would like some head shots and portraits for castings and auditions as she is a dancer. One I had discussed the clients needs I started to research headshot photography further, I created a Pinterest board of various photographs which I then shared with the client for inspiration. The final stage of my research was looking at a professional headshot photographer. I researched the prices they charged, what the photoshoot included and the standard of work produced.
A major part of the assignment is professionalism. I order to produce work that can be used legally and safely within the commercial industry you must have the relevant forms to support each commission. The types of legal documents I have used are : a contract, between myself - the photographer and the client. A risk assessment, to help identify and minimise any hazards that could be present during the photoshoot, a model release form, this is signed by the model to confirm they agree to being in the photographs for their specified use. A license to use form, signed by the photographer, licensing the client to use the photographs under the stated conditions. All these forms help protect the photographer and client should there be any legal dispute.
Due to the amount of research I had done and contact I had had with the client, I was very confident I could produce the work they wanted. During the final shoot I used the Pinterest board I created earlier to help the client with various poses. I had allowed two hours for the photo shoot and finished within that time. This photoshoot really helped me to practice working effectively in a professional environment. Whilst talking with client she also mentioned she would like to do a fashion shoot at a later date.
Having an independent brief that could be adapted depending on the client gave me the opportunity to complete my assignment whilst professional gaining skills that I can use in the the industry. I have really enjoyed this assignment, this is the first time I have worked with a client and I am very pleased with the outcome.
